Little Birds reading series at Tavin in Echo Park
It's best to arrive on time at the still-new Little Birds reading series held at Tavin, an ethereal clothing boutique in Echo Park. Tavin is small and fills up quickly; overflow winds up on the sidewalk.
Vintage gowns, soft light from a chandelier and eclectic ephemera give the shop a Parisian feel, or what those of us who have never been to Paris imagine is a Parisian feel. In an article for the L.A. Times, writer Steffie Nelson described the atmosphere at the Tavin clothing boutique as a "colorful gypsy caravan." After writing about the shop, Nelson paired up with its owner Erin Tavin to launch the Little Birds reading series.
Jillian Lauren (brunette, in profile, above) signs books after reading from her memoir "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem." It's the first book from Lauren, who is the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner. Her debut novel is set to come out next year.
Novelist Janelle Brown sits on the small stage at the front of the store to chat with fans after reading from her new book, "This Is Where We Live." Brown, who was coming down with laryngitis, managed to make it through the reading.
The boutique's owner, Erin Tavin, right, said she wanted to create a cultural event. When not ringing up books, she was busy pouring wine for guests.
There have been three Little Birds readings, all with female writers. Plans for the next one are still gelling; the best way to find out more is to check the events schedule at Tavin.
